Arapaima:

Season: Summer
The largest freshwater fish in the world, they poke their heads above water to breathe.

Arowana:

Size: 2.3 feet
Habitat: Rivers
Season: Summer
The male raises its young in its mouth. While doing this, he eats nothing. What dedication.

Barbel Steed:

Season: All year
Related to carp. "Barbel" refers to whiskers.

Barred Knifejaw:

Size: 23.4 inches

Season: Spring and Summer
Tough to catch.

Black Bass:

Size: 19.5 inches

They breed well, as the males guard the eggs.

Bluegill:

Size: 9.8 inches

Their name comes from their blue gills. The spines on their backs serve as protection.

Blue Marlin:

Month: August
They attack prey with a sharp horn before eating it.

Carp:

They feed by sucking the river's bottom.

Catfish:

They're nocturnal carnivores and cannibals. This, of course, makes them hard to breed.

Clownfish spend life protected by anemones. All clownfish start life as males.

Coelacanth:

Called "living fossils" these can grow as big as people

Crawfish:

Size: 4.7 inches

Season: Spring and Summer
When threatened, they cut their legs off, but these grow back when they molt.

Crucian Carp:

Size: 11.7 inches

Season: All year
Unlike carp, crucian carp lack whiskers.

Dace:

They're just the Average Joe of the fish world.

Eel:

Size: 3.25 feet

They are actually born in the ocean. They have scales that are too small to be seen.

Freshwater Goby:

Size: 5.9 inches

Season: Winter to Summer
Nocturnal. To keep from getting swept away, they use suction cups to stabilize themselves. They have an audible cry.

Frog:

Their skin must be wet for them to survive, but they can't live in water.

Gar:

They resemble alligators, and are so large, they can even eat waterfowl.

Giant Snakehead:

Their name comes from their snakelike look. Their teeth are strong, so watch your fingers.

Goldfish:

A member of the carp family, it's bred for beauty. However, unlike carp, goldfish have no whiskers.

Guppy:

They're a type of killifish, bred for observation. They are hardy and easy to raise.

Hammerhead Shark:

There are eight species of hammerheads. They school and rarely attack humans.

Horse Mackerel:

They have hard scales called "scutes."

Jellyfish:

These plankton have a vicious sting!

Killifish:

Though small, they're efficient breeders. They love the sun and warm places.

Koi:

Bred to be admired, koi are easy to raise. They can live up to 100 years.

Ocean Sunfish:

Habitat: Ocean

A relative of the blowfish, they have caudal fins at birth, but as they grow, the fins vanish.

Octopus:

Season: Fall to Spring
As intelligent as a ten-month-old human baby, they can change colors to match their surroundings.

Olive Flounder:

Size: 2.6 feet
Habitat: Ocean
Season: Spring to Fall
Their eyes are in the middle when they are born, then move to either side as they mature.

Pale Chub:

Size: 5.9 inches
Habitat: Rivers
Season: All year
They can be caught and eaten year-round! The fisherman's best friend.

Piranha:

Size: 11.7 inches
Habitat: Rivers
Season: Summer
They eat small fish by tearing off pieces and swallowing them whole.

Popeyed Goldfish:

Size: 5.9 inches
Habitat: Rivers
Season: All year
Though their eyes are big, their vision is poor. That's why they have a hard time finding food.

Puffer Fish:

Size: 13.7 inches
Habitat: Ocean
Season: Summer
Each puffer fish has about 400 needles. They're related to blowfish, but aren't poisonous.

Rainbow Trout:

Size: 2.3 feet
Habitat: Rivers
Season: Spring and Fall
Their orange color resembles a rainbow. Because they are hearty eaters, they are fun to catch and good to eat.

Red Snapper:

Size: 2.9 feet
Habitat: Ocean
Season: All year
Their red color comes from their shrimp diet.

Salmon:

Month: September
They are famous for their roe. Their flesh is pink, but they're white fish.

Sea Bass:

They put up a fight, but it's worth it.

Seahorse:

Size: 3.1 inches
Habitat: Ocean
Season: Spring to Fall
They look like reptiles but are, in fact, fish. The female lays her eggs in the male's stomach.

Squid:

Season: Winter to Summer
Eight of its ten appendages are arms, and the other two are tentacles.

Sweetfish:

Size: 9.8 inches
Habitat: Rivers
Season: Summer
Depending on where they're caught, their flavor can change. It's common to use sweetfish to catch sweetfish.

Zebra Turkeyfish:

Size: 11.7 inches
Habitat: Ocean
Season: Spring to Fall
Their dorsal fin is poisonous, so don't get stung! They are calm fish, and won't scare off easily.
